Fire & Stove Safety
Fire Safety & Stove Use
Ellis Canvas Tents are made with 7 oz Cotton Duck canvas finished with authentic Sunforger® treatment. Like all natural canvas, it will burn if exposed to an open flame or sustained heat source. Keep all flames and heat sources away from the tent fabric at all times and never leave a fire unattended near or inside your tent.
Why We Don't Use Fire Retardants
We don't treat our canvas with flame retardant chemicals. These chemicals have been proven to leach out over time, losing their effectiveness while leaving behind residue that poses legitimate environmental and health concerns. We believe well-made, non-FR canvas — used responsibly — is the better choice for our customers and the environment.
Stove Use
Only Ellis Canvas Tents fitted with our proprietary stove jack assembly are designed for use with a wood-burning stove. Always use a spark arrestor on the stovepipe, remove the stove jack flap completely. Read and follow all stove manufacturer instructions before use, and familiarize yourself with operating the stove for controlled burns outside of the tent. Never leave a burning stove unattended.
Ellis Canvas Tents have been designed and tested to be compatible with Winnerwell Nomad wood stoves and associated accessories. Each of our stove kits provides all of the necessary components for use with a specific Ellis tent design and size. The use of any other wood stove brand or supplemental accessories is not recommended.
State Restrictions
Certain states (CA, LA, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NY) have requirements regarding flame retardant treatment on tent fabrics. If you are ordering from one of these states, we recommend checking your local regulations prior to finalizing your purchase.
